The town played an important role in the great days of the woollen industry and wool was largely responsible for the growth and development of Nailsworth. As with many other Cotswold towns and villages, during the 15th-century, wool merchants descended on the town. They built fine homes for themselves and their families and they filled the fields surrounding the town with grazing sheep. The thick fleeces provided fine wool from which excellent profit was gained. The wealthy merchants gave generously to the town and the church and it for this reason that we see in the Cotswolds the finest ‘wool’ churches in the country. Nailsworth has its share of glorious mellow honey coloured stone houses and cottages, with luxuriant foliage creeping over walls and doorways. Black and white timber-frame cottages are interspersed in the leafy lanes surrounding the town, which lies in a thickly wooded valley. These pretty cottages, have neat gardens and roses ramble wildly amidst hedges and over doors – reaching skywards to thickly thatched roofs.

Farmer creates heart-shaped meadow in memory of wife A devoted farmer created this touching heart-shaped meadow as a tribute to his late wife – by planting thousands of oak trees. The giant heart formed with oak trees which Winston Howes planted in memory of his late wife Janet. He laid out the fledgling trees in a six-acre field but left a perfect heart shape in the middle – with the point facing in the direction of her childhood home.
The labour of love has now blossomed into a mature meadow – a peaceful oasis where Winston can sit and remember his wife of 33 years.

When he asked for some copper nails at a hardware shop the assistant asked him if he wanted to kill some trees, so I imagine there must be some substance to this theory. Lynda Labuhn, Bruehl, Germany labuhn t-online. MINUTE amounts of copper might dissolve and pass into the sap flowing up through the trunk, but plants are quite tolerant of low concentrations – in fact copper is actually needed by plants, as a component of some proteins essential for photosynthesis. And high concentrations of copper salts have long been used to spray on plants as effective fungicides e.
Bordeaux mixture – copper sulphate and lime. At best the copper object may help to inhibit fungal attack near the wound, which would usually heal with time. Of course the copper could be a problem later if the tree is sawn for timber. Ken Joy, lsrak csv. William Hamlin, Ontario, Canada. Some years ago, when cutting up the trunk of a typically vigorous poplar, I came across a ring of copper nails. Several inches inside the wood, the tree had enclosed them and carried on growing with no ill effects.

A Landrover driver who was killed when he was hit by a train on a level crossing had been given the all clear to drive over the track by a railway signalman, a coroner heard today. One of his dogs also died. Today Gloucestershire coroner Katie Skerrett held a pre-inquest hearing to discuss with lawyers what issues the jury will have to consider when the full inquest is held on a date to be fixed between April and June this year.
During today’s hearing it emerged that Mr Cameron had stopped at the crossing and spoken on the phone to the nearest signalman. He allegedly told the signalman that a train had passed by not long before. He was then allegedly told it was clear for him to drive across – but was then hit by an inter-city express and killed.

Stroud, on the western edge of the Cotswolds, is a town set steeply at the center of the Stroud Valleys, 5 valleys that are peppered with gorgeous cottages, old cloth mills, wild flowers and great views all around and of the Severn Vale.
Ian Mackintosh The local textile industry dates back to the Middle Ages and evidence for a mill at Longfords survives in the Minchinhampton Custumal of It was described there as a water mill which is interpreted as meaning it was a corn mill. However by the s it was a combined fulling and corn mill, typical of many in the valleys. In Thomas Playne leased the estate, house, farm and mill.
An estate map of shows the extent of the property and location of the buildings. Thomas Playne was one of many local and generally small suppliers to the East India Company. The brothers divided Longfords and Dunkirk between them with William occupying the whole Longfords site. It was estimated that the cloth if laid end to end would have reached from the mill to their London office. Unlike the Stanley and Ebley Mills sites where major new buildings replaced the historic fulling mills Playnes added new buildings when necessary.
This meant extensive new brick buildings which have since been removed, new machinery and the introduction of electricity. The Avening brook approaches from the east and the waste water passes the mill to the south. Later maps show the mill being increasingly surrounded by other buildings. A plan dated shows the new arrangement of a mill pond replacing the leat and buildings attached to the north end of the mill. The mill has a date stone which is the date when William Playne assumed it was built but the style of lettering is early 19th century.

What a find – fantastic evening Quite a late decision to go out for dinner and didn’t really fancy a ‘chain restaurant’ which doesn’t really leave a lot of choice in Gloucester! Not really knowing what to expect we started with a drink at the bar where they have a fantastic selection of drinks and my wife had a mojito the best she has ever had apparently. There was a very pleasant atmosphere in the bar and the staff were friendly and allowed us to take our time before taking us through to the restaurant.
This is where the evening becomes a little different as we ordered our food from a very balanced menu with quite a strong Asain theme. We both chose steak 1 fillet and 1 sirloin and we both chose the ‘black rock’ option – so our food came in a couple of minutes on a stunningly hot black rock and we basically cooked our raw steaks ourselves – being quite a fussy steak eater and never having real confidence in getting my steak cooked exactly how I like it this was brilliant.
The steaks came with a side of chips and a very well dressed salad in a separate compartment from the hot stone.

Officers from British Transport Police were also involved in the search for the woman who was found safe and well.

This doesn’t mean that you’re necessarily at risk, there are scales of both, and it could be that you are just experiencing low mood or moderate anxiety.
The most important thing to do is to let people around you know how you’re feeling.
The most common type of reaction I have witnessed is that is of interest and fascination. Classes of primary school children are particularly enjoyable visitors, I find: They ask so many questions usually simultaneously: It really is a joy to behold! Equally rewarding is the reaction of adult visitors who are genuinely interested and want to talk about where the individual was found, how you can work out their sex and age, how long ago they lived, and so on and so forth.
About Rickman Motorcycles Adrian Moss and Rickman Motorcycles In , motorcycle enthusiast and award winning rider Adrian Moss thought there must be many more classic bikes out there than those he was currently repairing and rebuilding in his Stroud base. Through such projects, Adrian became a regular customer of the Rickman Motorcycles factory in New Milton and was able to build up a good relationship with Derek and Don Rickman, the famous duo, through their shared love of building motorcycles.
He told me they were stopping production and asked whether I would be interested in buying their complete stock of fibreglass moulds. Pre specialist Realising what a unique and exciting opportunity he was presented with Adrian decided to specialise in the pre bikes up to the mark III and spoke to Derek Lambert parts manager who after consultation with the Rickman Brothers, it was agreed he could buy all of the available spares, parts and even the master frame for the mkIII machine.
The Rickman brothers sold some of the remaining stock to another motorcycle enthusiast and builder – the late Pat French, who at the time had established and ran his company MRD Model Replica and Design, originally specialising in aircraft models This included many spares for the MK1V model of Rickman motorcycle. Upon hitting hard times with his business in the late 90s Mr French embarked on a “brief, unsuccessful business partnership, which failed to live up to his expectations.
Pat French registered the name “Metisse” which had become associated with a particular model that the Rickman brothers were producing. It reflected their opinions that there were good engines and good frames but that the two were rarely put together. The British Bike Bonanza Alongside running his business in Stroud, in Adrian organised the first specialist motorcycle scramble for pre machines, at Moorhouse, Brimsfield, Birdlip, Gloucester. The British Bike Bonanza was born, click for more details.
